Chapter Fourteen

Hayden

A good half hour passed—I wasn’t timing him, but it was hard not to notice—before Levi walked into the kitchen. He still looked tired, but he was steadier on his feet than when I’d helped him to the bathroom. I waved a hand at the kitchen table, inviting him to sit.

He eased himself onto a chair with a relief that told the story of him still having a long way to go before he was back to being one hundred percent.

“I’m making soup,” I said. “I’m hoping you can get a bit more of it down than you have in the last couple of days. You usually only managed a couple of spoons before you zonked out.” Levi shot me what I was beginning to think of as his wary look. I wasn’t an idiot. I could tell he was far from comfortable at finding himself here. Mixed in with that, though, was a gratefulness he was doing his best not to show. “Are you hungry?”

He smoothed his hands over the wood of the table while he contemplated the question. He had nice hands, his fingers long and graceful like he should have played the piano. Funny how I’d never noticed that before. “I’m not sure,” he finally admitted. “I’m not sure about a lot of things.”

I smiled at his honesty. “That’s understandable. You’ve spent the last few days in your own world.” I pulled an onion in front of me and started chopping it. “I’m making minestrone soup. Does that work for you?” I waited for his nod before continuing. “When did you get ill?”

“Sunday. I thought I’d be okay for Monday, but obviously I wasn’t.” He ran a hand through his damp curls. “I should have told someone I was ill.”

“Who?” I regretted the question as soon as Levi dropped his gaze to the table and refused to look at me. Talk about sticking the knife in.

“Darien maybe,” he said with a shrug. “I had an appointment with him on Saturday.”

I didn’t roll my eyes, but it was a feat of willpower not to do so. “Ah yes, my saintly brother would have made a far better nursemaid than me.”

“I doubt that.”

If that was a compliment, I’d take it. Abandoning the half-chopped onion for a moment, I went over to the other side of the kitchen and pulled the drawer open, rummaging around in it until I found what I was looking for. Once I had it, I returned to Levi, depositing it in front of him.

He stared at it. “What’s this?”

“A phone,” I said as I returned to the counter, picked the knife up, and continued chopping. “I know you were in prison for a couple of years, but I’m pretty sure we had them before you went in there.”

“Very funny. I can see it’s a phone. Why are you giving it to me?”

“Because,” I said slowly, knowing that if I didn’t tread carefully, there wasn’t a hope in hell of getting him to accept it.
