Chapter Fourteen
Hayden
A good half hour passedâI wasnât timing him, but it was hard not to noticeâbefore Levi walked into the kitchen. He still looked tired, but he was steadier on his feet than when Iâd helped him to the bathroom. I waved a hand at the kitchen table, inviting him to sit.
He eased himself onto a chair with a relief that told the story of him still having a long way to go before he was back to being one hundred percent.
âIâm making soup,â I said. âIâm hoping you can get a bit more of it down than you have in the last couple of days. You usually only managed a couple of spoons before you zonked out.â Levi shot me what I was beginning to think of as his wary look. I wasnât an idiot. I could tell he was far from comfortable at finding himself here. Mixed in with that, though, was a gratefulness he was doing his best not to show. âAre you hungry?â
He smoothed his hands over the wood of the table while he contemplated the question. He had nice hands, his fingers long and graceful like he should have played the piano. Funny how Iâd never noticed that before. âIâm not sure,â he finally admitted. âIâm not sure about a lot of things.â
I smiled at his honesty. âThatâs understandable. Youâve spent the last few days in your own world.â I pulled an onion in front of me and started chopping it. âIâm making minestrone soup. Does that work for you?â I waited for his nod before continuing. âWhen did you get ill?â
âSunday. I thought Iâd be okay for Monday, but obviously I wasnât.â He ran a hand through his damp curls. âI should have told someone I was ill.â
âWho?â I regretted the question as soon as Levi dropped his gaze to the table and refused to look at me. Talk about sticking the knife in.
âDarien maybe,â he said with a shrug. âI had an appointment with him on Saturday.â
I didnât roll my eyes, but it was a feat of willpower not to do so. âAh yes, my saintly brother would have made a far better nursemaid than me.â
âI doubt that.â
If that was a compliment, Iâd take it. Abandoning the half-chopped onion for a moment, I went over to the other side of the kitchen and pulled the drawer open, rummaging around in it until I found what I was looking for. Once I had it, I returned to Levi, depositing it in front of him.
He stared at it. âWhatâs this?â
âA phone,â I said as I returned to the counter, picked the knife up, and continued chopping. âI know you were in prison for a couple of years, but Iâm pretty sure we had them before you went in there.â
âVery funny. I can see itâs a phone. Why are you giving it to me?â
âBecause,â I said slowly, knowing that if I didnât tread carefully, there wasnât a hope in hell of getting him to accept it.
